Gazexport, an export arm of Russian energy giant Gazprom, may prolong an agreement with Gaz de France on natural gas supplies until 2020, the company's first deputy director said Thursday.

Sergei Yemelyanov said talks were under way and the current agreement on natural gas supplies until 2012 might be extended for eight more years.

In August, Gaz de France chief executive Jean-Francois Cirelli said he planned to sign a long-term agreement on natural gas supplies that would leave Gazprom as a privileged partner for the company.

State-run company Gaz de France is a major player on the European energy market. It produces, transports, distributes and sells gas and electricity and has 13.8 million customers.
