Russian-Japanese economic cooperation is developing well,  said senior official with the Russian Economic Development and Trade Ministry.

"We have started a major work on promoting Russian-Japanese trade and are energetically developing cooperation in the crediting and financial sphere," said Dmitry Levchenko, the deputy director of the ministry's department for investment policy, in Tokyo.

Levchenko added that it was highly important that a number of Japanese companies had decided to open plants in Russia.

Bilateral trade in January-July 2005 increased by 17% against the same period in 2004 to reach $5.6 billion. Last year, total trade between Russia and Japan totaled about $9 billion.
